Liberal Arts Colleges: Decoding their Majors

When most folks read or hear about Liberal Arts Colleges, the first thought that that pops into their mind is that these colleges teach mostly Liberal Artsy majors. But what exactly is a Liberal Art major?

And what are the majors that are taught at Liberal Arts Colleges?

Liberal Arts Colleges (LAC) offer a fairly large spectrum of majors that can be categorized along the following lines:

  1. Liberal Arts and Humanities
  2. Sciences
  3. Social Studies
  4. Other disciplines such as Education, Business Administration, Natural Resource Planning etc

The figure above shows the most frequently offered majors in each of these categories at Liberal Arts Colleges across the country. Interestingly, many Liberal Arts Colleges are now also offering General Engineering and Pre-Engineering majors at a few selected institutions.
